I am the son of Iris Taypotat and Morley Watson. Grandson to Albert and Marjorie Taypotat and Ivan and Jeanette Watson. I was raised by Denton and Beatrice George of Ochapowace Nation. I was given my Indian name before I deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 by Beverly Yuzicappi of Standing Buffalo First Nation. I am known as Oyate Nawicajezi which means “Defends the People.” This is my first term as Chief of Kahkewistahaw First Nation and reside here on our homeland.
Throughout my travels in this world, I have always been proud of where I was raised and where I come from. From traveling for sports, throughout my university days, as I served as a soldier in the Canadian Forces, and most recently as the Principal of our Community School, I have always boasted to the people about the beauty and strength of our homelands. I love Kahkewistahaw and I look forward to helping lead it through the times that are ahead.
As I start our 3 year term, I promise to always keep each band members best interests at the forefront. I am dedicated to the fight to honour and implement our Treaty and inherent rights. Economic Development is a means to reaching this goal. I fully believe that our Nation’s future successes lie in its progression. Through this development, we can enhance support for education, health and other areas. We have recently instated a new Economic Development Board. It is my belief that through their thoughtful guidance, our Nation will achieve status with the likes of Osoyoos, Lac la Ronge and Whitecap First Nations. In time, our ventures and the fruits of our labours will lead us to greatness and help make our people sovereign.
Lastly, I am a proud Hurricane. Chief Kahkewistahaw Community School Hurricanes make me proud everyday. I was lucky enough to be a part of that TEAM and I look forward to watching our youth grow. As Chief Sitting Bull said, “Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children”. I am proud to be part of a Nation that values our children and fosters their growth; a Nation that knows our success depends on the youth’s successes.
If you have any questions or concerns please get a hold of me by any means. Together, we will make Kahkewistahaw great, hiy hiy.
