Good Morning Kahkewistahaw First Nation,
Yesterday, Kahkewistahaw Chief and Council received a settlement offer for the Treaty 4 Agricultural Benefits Specific Claim (commonly known as “Cows & Ploughs”), which was filed with the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations on August 10, 2021.
The offer presented to Kahkewistahaw First Nation is for 133 million ($133,698,067 to be exact), and today we share this our community.
Next Steps:
Our legal team at Maurice Law will assist in organizing the next steps, which are outlined below:
Post Notification for Information Sessions – Tentatively scheduled for January 1, 2025.
Host Information Sessions for Membership – Anticipated for mid-January 2025.
Hold Membership Vote – Approximately 30 days after step 1, likely in early February 2025.
Payment to KFN (if the vote is successful) – Expected in March 2025.
During the information sessions, we will provide details about the offer, answer questions, and gather community input on how the funds should be allocated if the offer is approved through a membership vote.
Chief and Council are preparing for a busy and exciting few months as we navigate this important process. Soon, our members will have the opportunity to vote on the Treaty 4 Agricultural Benefits Specific Claim. Our goal is to ensure a transparent and inclusive process for all.
Today, we honor the resilience and sacrifices of our ancestors, whose strength brought us to this moment. The benefits of this settlement reflect their struggles and perseverance. As we move forward, we commit to celebrating their legacy, supporting our people today, and planning for future generations.
I am #KahkewistahawProud. Together, we embrace this unique and positive situation—a step we will take united as a strong community.
On behalf of KFN Council,
Chief Evan Taypotat
